I suspect in the fullnesws of time Latifah will be most appropriately recorded as a hip-hop artist with her film work as just a sidenote. It's curious to note that her best work so far has been in musicals (Chicago and Hairspray), the rest of her back catalogue is generally best avoided - see Valentine's Day for proof!
