Shirley Valentine herself has a lot to be celebrating this year, not only is it a special birthday for her but she's also got a pivotal supporting role in the upcoming Woody Allen picture You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (and it doesn't look awful). I think that deserves a plate of egg and chips to celebrate.

I liked "Shirley Valentine" a lot. And I cannot wait for Woody's latest!
I've actually never seen Shirley Valentine. I'll probably not do that soon, not because I have something against it, I'm sure it's fun, I just didn't have a great reason to.
but I am fascinated by one-time wonders in the Best Actress category. Best Actress 1989 was a strange mix, with even more obscure/strange runner-ups.
Tom - is there a US release date yet? I know we don't have one over here.
Alex - I'm sure both Tom and I will join in and tell you you must catch up with Shirley Valentine, it's low-key but exceptionally funny, especially the opening scenes in the house she shares with Bernard Hill.
