Tuesday Trailers - True Grit

Here's the thing, I have recently rewatched the original John Wayne starring adaptation of Charles Portis' Western novel and I confess to enjoying it more than I emember, sure it's uninterestingly directed and a little uncertain of tone but I can't see why the Coen's have decided to return to the book for a new version - especially as watching the trailer it appears most of the dialogue is identical. I realise the clamour on the internet is that this will be the best thing since sliced bread but I have my doubts. Will definitely see it though.

True Grit is released on 14 January 2011.

I share your trepidation about this film. Why True Grit? Why now? Of all the films originally made in 1969, this would seem to be the least likely for a remake. I get an uneasy feeling from the Coens, who relish the queasy and the grotesque. I am not sure this will be on my must-see list. I also can't understand the sudden love affair with the grubby Jeff Bridges...he has so much appeal, I can hardly watch him reinvent himself as a slob.

I think part of Bridges appeal has always been that he's a scruffy slobby guy anyway. If you look at the early performances in Last Picture Show and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot he always seems very relaxed and less uptight than his co-stars. So that doesn't really bother me.

Yeah, I like his relaxed quality too...and the early performances you cite were great. He seems to have lost a bit of playfulness, maybe it's just the roles he's getting.
