Woody Allen

Happy Birthday to

Woody Allen

75 today

Writer, Director, Actor, Jazz Clarinetist, there isn't a lot that Woody can't do, and for most of his career everything he touched turned to gold. Unfortunately we have seen a declines over the last 15 years, possibly not helped by his churning of projects (he has directed at least one film per year since 1982). You will meet a Tall Dark Stranger has already has it's US release and is scheduled to come out here in March, the next onw after that will be Midnight in Paris.

I have been a big follower of Woody Allen for a long time. His collected works are a fine library of pop culture, personal relationships, love, death, and the meaning of it all. I don't know if contemporary filmgoers understand how significant Allen's continued independence is, his ability to use popular film to explore abstract ideas and remain popular and entertaining, his wit and depth (which are so absent from most modern American films), and his freedom to experiment and make films is way.

Hi Tom,

You're right Allen is one of the most fascinating and significant writer/directors in cinema history. The mere fact that he continues to work outside the studio system is extraordinarily telling, and he's one of the few masters who absolutely refuses to compromise his talent.

That said I would love for him to slow down and take more time over a picture which would hopefully increase the likelihood of making a really good one.
