Happy Birthday to
Patty Duke
63 today
Patty Duke won an Oscar for her performance as a deaf-blind girl in 1962's The Miracle Worker. She beat Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate. It is a dreadful screeching performance in a dull film, and she beat Angela Lansbury. I will never forgive her. (Although if you're reading this Patty, I still want you to have a good birthday)

I rather liked "The Miracle Worker"! Maybe because Helen Keller has always inspired me.
Another young actress competed that same year; Mary Badham in "To Kill A Mockingbird." Poor Angela didn't have a chance....
Have you ever seen "The Patty Duke Show", a TV sitcom from the early '60's? Duke plays 2 roles: a typical American teenager, and her "identical cousin" from England. It's still playing in Chicago in syndication!
And who could forget Duke's incredible, delicious Neely O'Hara in "Valley of the Dolls"? She is still a great sport in regard to her critical drubbing in that one.
Great to have you remember her!

I'm as inspired by Helen Keller as the next man, but every line in "The Miracle Worker" is delivered as if all the audience are sitting on the back row and it's really important that they hear.
I'm afriad I've never seen "the Patty Duke show", although it sounds like an intriging premise.
