Sally Kellerman

Happy Birthday to

Sally Kellerman

73 today

I don't mean to come across as bitchy, but whilst Sally is more than willing to act to her age - remeber her in the Boynton Beach Bereavement Club a couple of years ago when she moved into a retirement home and got all the men hot under the collar? - but why can't she look her age? Honestly I've rarely seen a face so at odds with the hands.

Hot Lips Houlihan!! The original "M*A*S*H" was the first R-rated film I was allowed to see as a kid(yes, at that time the rating system was strictly enforced). It is still one of my most memorable moviegoing experiences, due in large part to Kellerman's larger-than-life portrayal of a "typical army clown". Thanks for remembering her.

Embarassingly though I have seen the film I spent so many of my formative years watching the TV series that Loretta Swit will always be Hot Lips to me. When I first saw the film I almost questioned who the imposter was.

I remember being about 8 or 9 and it was the only programme me and my sister were allowed to watch after the nine o'clock watershed and the only thing the whole family would sit down for.

I'm glad that her birthday has sparked the memory. What else do you remember about watching the film that first time?

Wow, it is SO vivid. I remember hearing and reading about it constantly, so I knew the basic story. One thing I remember was being the only kid in a packed house, and the LAUGHTER! It was like being in a special club. Suddenly laughter would become gasps of silence as the camera moved into the operating room.

The scene where Hot lips gets her nickname was my favorite....As well as the dreamy look Jo Ann Pflug gives right to the camera as she is carried away in the helicopter after her awesome night curing the impotence of Painless the Dentist.

I understand Kellerman's role as written took her out of the story after her outburst when she is "revealed" in the shower. Altman was so impressed that he expanded her part and kept her in. She received an Oscar nomination for her performance.

I saw MASH right after the Oscars. "Patton", which took the lion's share, was my Dad's all-time favorite film, and 20th Century-Fox released both of thenm as a double feature. So I had just sat through 3 hours worth of "Patton" before MASH started.

I felt like I was misbehaving...it was glorious...one of the best times of my life.
