Happy Birthday to
John Lithgow
66 today
I can't help but think there's a certain sniffiness about audience opinion of Lithgow, his long running stint on TV's "Third Rock from the Sun" obscures the two dramatic supporting actor Academy Award nominations. Maybe his acclaimed turn in Rise of the Planet of the Apes will introduce him to a whole new generation of film fans. Next up is ensemble romantic comedy New Years Eve.

I LOVE John Lithgow! I always plan to write a whole post devoted to him, but never get to it. He stood out to me in Terms of Endearment, he quiet and sweet. Then, he was a wise and great friend plus cross dresser in The World According to Garp. After that he was believable as an overbearing father who outlaws dancing in Footloose! I mean come on! What one actor can do all that?
Lithgow does have a good range for roles in his resume. I, too, loved him in Garp. When I saw Kinsey, I thougt his role was similar to his turn in Footloose! Does anyone remember him as the treacherous stage director in All That Jazz?
In spite of all these great roles with an almost unparalleled range, when I think of Lithgow I always think of Santa Claus: The Movie. How sad am I?
