Happy Birthday to
Candice Bergen
65 today
I really don't know why Candy is so famous. It's a mystery to me. I think it must be an American thing, after all a quick namecheck on "Will & Grace" got a laugh from the studio audience. Of course I've seen her oscar nominated role in Starting Over and a couple of other film performances but there's nothing in film that would put her so high in the public consciousness. Maybe it's her staunch feminism, maybe being the first woman to host "Saturday Night Live" or maybe the ten-year run of "Murphy Brown". I don't know. Anyone like to enlighten me.

I'm not American, but I'm generally sure that it's MURPHY BROWN. She won like half a dozen Emmy's or something until she decided to take herself out the race, if I remember correctly.
Hi Andrew - glad to have you back.
Serial Emmy winner, that would make sense. Is it any good? Should I try and catch up with some old episodes?
I've only caught a few random episodes. The show lasted for over 200 episodes I don't know when I'll have time to devote that much energy to an old series. I did love her guest work on WILL & GRACE.
Candice is Hollywood Legacy. Her father was the hugely popular ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen (whose "dummy" was named Charlie McCarthy). So that was her ticket to screendom.
She was panned for early work in "Getting Straight" (with Ellott Gould) and the terribly violent western "Soldier Blue", both circa 1971. She made a few other films and probably traded on sex appeal until the late 1970's when she demonstrated some acting talent (she received an Oscar nomination in '79.)
In spite of many film appearances, it were her TV roles that brought her her greatest recognition.
Hope that fills in some history...
Thanks for the updates chaps. I suppose I need to do more research for the birthdays in general!
