Sean Penn

Happy Birthday to

Sean Penn

51 today

Two time Oscar winner Penn is going through a rather odd patch in his career, firstly he wanted to take a couple of years out to be with the family, then he took the tiny supporting role in Terence Malick's Tree of Life and his other Cannes flick This must be the Place, oddly nothing's pricking my fancy.

Penn seems a lot older... I admire his independent streak. While his role in "Tree of Life" was sort of undeveloped, I can't help but wonder if Malick was making some sort of thematic connection (for himself, at least) to "The Thin Red Line".

And then there was "Milk". Whatever Penn does from now on, I will always appreciate his work in that film.

I really enjoy your birthday pieces, Ben, it is a chance to reconsider those performers who don't alweays get their due.

Interesting you say his role was underdeveloped given the reservations he's recently discussed in La Monde.

Thank you for sticking with the birthday pieces - they're a pleasure to write too.
