Running (23/10/11)

I'm a day late writing because yesterdays run was a little disaster. a) my pace was way off where I want it to be b) the pain in my knee wont go away and, most significantly c) I took a dive whilst on the Bury New Road yesterday. One minute I was fine the next I was lying on the pavement with stigmata. Typing is still awkward. Hmpfh.

5 runs
17.8 miles

Running (16/10/11)

On the off chance you're a regular reader of my running posts you will know that 5 weeks ago today I was due to complete the Nottingham Marathon, the culmination of over 30 weeks of training. You will also have spotted that I hadn't shared my results. I kept quiet because, frankly, I was a touch ashamed. After 14 miles my knee gave out and I had to retire from the race. Now after a few days on crutches and a few physiotherapy sessions, not to mention a four week rest, I've started back on an easy routine. There's ache, but not the pain there was, but I'm not feeling 100% yet. Anyway this week:

5 runs
12.9 miles
1 hours 43 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.50 mph

Experian Robin Hood Festival of Running

And we're off:

The Experian Robin Hood Marathon in the gorgeous city of Nottingham has just started. Somewhere in the crowds I'm there ready to take on the 26 and a bit mile course, hoping this will be the year I finally break the four hour mark.

In the last week up to now I've been out for a few ultra short runs just to keep me going but without pushing me to the limit.

5 runs
17.7 miles
2 hours 17 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.70 mph.

I've been on quite a journey this year, I've been training since February, losing over 3.5 stone and my weekly average pace has gone from less than 6 mph to over 7.5 mph. In all this time I've been out 155 times completing 879 miles. That's further than the distance from Land's end to John O'Groats, and roughly equates to the length of California from the Oregon to Mexican borders!

Anyway please wish me luck, or spend a couple of moments today thinking about the runners of Notts. Cheers Ben

Running (04/09/11)

Right now I am in agony. I don't know what I've done but my left knee has really been giving me hell over th e last couple of days, so much sop that today I had to walk for a bit. What's really annoying is that this is coming with just a week before the Marathon so I'm going to have to make a decision about whether to continue with the race (after all I shouldn't run injured). Of course looking at the knee there's nothing wrong with it, no swelling, so it's possible its all psychosomatic. Anyone out there prepared to give me some advice?

Running (28/08/11)

I'm sorry about last weekend, I'm afraid what with the play and all I didn't get the opportunity to update my running posts. At least that's the official excuse. The reality is that I didn't do the long run last weekend and felt a little embarrassed. I'm still one run behind where I should be but it's only a short so all good. Only 2 weeks until the Nottingham Robin Hood Marathon...

(Over the last two weeks)

9 runs
68.3 miles
9 hours 07 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.50 mph

Running (14/08/11)

I ran another half marathon distance today - same as last weekend - I was hoping to make it round just a little quicker than last week however in the end I was 0.08% slower (I know it's marginal but of course that matter when running long distances). That said over the week I had my fastest average yet, breaking my mile record during the park run event yesterday. Only 4 weeks until the Nottingham Robin Hood Marathon...

5 runs
36.3 miles
4 hours 45 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.64 mph

Running (07/08/11)

No time to chat - just got from my half marathon training run (fairly good) and need to shower then rush out for rehearsal. Bought train ticket for Nottingham today as well - getting exciting and close with just five weeks to go.

Running (31/07/11)

Fairly average week until today, the normal six mile runs, some hill training and yesterday's parkrun in Heaton Park (I really cannot say how great it is joining in there - any Manc's who read this you must come and say hi!). Today I ran 18 miles as one of the big training runs, I managed a fairly stable running pace, which if I keep that going for the final 8 and a bit miles then I should do a marathon in 3 hours 40, which is good. Just six weeks to go until the Nottingham Marathon....

5 runs
38.9 miles
5 hours 18 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.33 mph

Running (24/07/11)

I'm halfway through my last training block (of 14 weeks) before the Nottingham Marathon, and I have to say I think it's going really quite well. This week certainly has seen an upswing on the poor performance from last week, in fact this week I've run the furthest for quite a while, and has the second lowest average speed of the last 7 weeks.

6 runs
42.5 miles
5 hours 45 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.38 mph

Running (17/07/11)

Very disappointing week and I don't really know why. Well, to be honest I do, in the week I was trying to run through woodland (on the final week of touring with Theatre&) and that had a detrimental affect on my times, and then with a continued bad diet from last week todays big run was slower that last weeks (even though it was only half the distance!). Any way... Only 8 weeks left until the Marathon now...

4 runs
28.0 miles
4 hours 01 minutes

Running (10/07/11)

Odd week with a decrease in the number of runs offset by an increase in overall distance and an actual increase on the pace, so overall I should be happy with my performance. That said I've fallen off the diet wagon big time, munching my way through a packet of rich tea and a pizza this week. Bad bad Ben... Need to show more self-control obviously. Only 9 weeks left until the Marathon now...

4 runs
31.6 miles
4 hours 21 minutes

Running (03/07/11)

Hopeless. I took the throttle off this week both in terms of distance and pace (although it was still far better than the avergae of the last 10 weeks), I hav a long run with a friend in this coming week planned so hopefully I'll be back on target by then. Only 10 weeks left until the Marathon now...

Running (26/06/11)

I'm not sure, but I think my weightloss may have plateaued, not that it's a big issue as I'm well within the BMI "normal" range but I've only lost 2 pounds in the last 3 weeks. Hey ho, at least I've managed to surpass my best weeks in terms of the pace when out on the road (although it's worth noting the average distance of a run is significantly shorter than last week). Only 11 weeks left until the Marathon now...

6 runs
30.1 miles
4 hours 03 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.44 mph

Running (19/06/11)

A little bit further than last week but the timing took a bit of a dive (just a tiny one), although part of that is down to some hill training which really took it out of me on Wednesday morning! Only 12 weeks left until the Marathon now...

5 runs
33.7 miles
4 hours 48 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.03 mph

Read on for some details of what I eat.

Last week Tom asked me to keep a diary of my eating habits, I suppose to understand what nutrients and proportion of food groups I'm taking in on the road to the marathon. Running (12/06/11)

First week of the proper training regime, and whilst I took the distance right down compared to the last couple of weeks I've kept the pace up and tried a couple of different things - some Fartlek training (fast, slow intervals) on Wednesday and 9 miles in the pouring rain today! Only 13 weeks until the Marathon...

Running (05/06/11)

It was the last week of totally pushing myself before slipping back into a proper routine on Tuesday, we're just 14 weeks until the Nottingham Marathon now. I'm going to be running Nottingham with a friend - Matt - and we went out for a run together on Thursday morning which made a nice change but I think I'm probably a natural loner when it come to running. The good news is whilst my distance increased this week (I don't think I've ever run as far in 7 days) the pace stayed about the same which bodes well for the rest of the training.

7 runs
47.7 miles
6 hours 48 minutes

So that's an average speed of 7.02 mph

Over the last 4 weeks I've run a total of:

22 runs
120.6 miles
17 hours 28 minutes

So that's an average speed of 6.90 mph

Running (29/05/11)

I'm really ramping up the training at present, just trying out much more brutal regimes before getting back into a more sedate pace ready for the Nottingham Marathon (yes, I've signed up for the third consecutive year) so next week will see a significant increase, even from this jump up. I expect the legs will be red raw but hopefully we'll get some nice results.

6 runs
34.9 miles
5 hours 02 minutes

So that's an average speed of 6.92 mph

Running (22/05/11)

Back to a more serious regime this week, and it's been great, really enjoyable and challenging. Yesterday I joined with the Heaton Park Parkrun event which was a fun chance to race against other runners (all UK runners I can heartily recommend signing up with them - it's free and local), hopefully I'll be able to pick that up and do more runs with them in the future.

26.4 miles

Much shorter distance this week, but it's good to see the average pace back up to where it should be. In fact I'm a whole 1 mile per hour quicker then last week on average which is great.

Running (08/05/11)

I'm very disappointted with my efforts this week - a major step back on th claim that I could run a marathon. In fact I did (not as a race just as me on my own) by I did it in an awfully slow time (some 20 minutes longer than my worst actual marathon) and had to walk a couple of miles. Must work out how to break that wall...

4 runs
33.5 miles
5 hours 36 minutes

So that's an average speed of 5.99 mph (the slowest I've been in 12 weeks.)

This also marks the end of a 14 week cycle, stand by for a couple of easier weeks before I start pushing myself again. Over those 14 weeks I've run:

64 runs
310.8 miles
2 Days 0 hours 50 minutes

So that's an average speed of 6.36 mph.

That's near enough the distance from my house to Bodmin in Cornwall. Much further and I'd have had to swim!
